PERS CONFERENCE "VISIT ASEAN COUNTRIES"
Ladies and gentlement,

Welcome to Casa de la Cultura, Embajada de Republica de Indonesia. To day, on behalf of ASEAN Ambassadors in Mexico (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam), I am happy to meet you to give explanation on ASEAN participation in the Expo Mundial Turismo (EMT), which will be held on 24 until 27 September 2003.

A prospective industry ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) consists of ten countries member: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The ASEAN region has a population of about 500 millions, with total area of about 4.5 million square kilometers. So far, ASEAN cooperation has resulted in greater regional integration, covering many aspects, included tourism. The cooperation in tourism is to make ASEAN as an attractive multi-faceted single tourist destination.

As tourist destination countries, tourism industry in ASEAN Countries have the tendencies to growth positively since the establishment of ASEAN in 1976 (36 years ago).Tourism remains a prospective industry for the economic future in South East Asia Countries. Tourism sector has significant contribution to the economic growth as it is one of the main foreign exchange generators for economic development in ASEAN Countries.

Under the ASEAN tourism mechanism framework, the ten countries are promoting "the ASEAN Perfect 10 Paradise - 10 dreams in one". We, the ASEAN Embassy in Mexico, hereby invite you to Visit 10 ASEAN Countries.

For ASEAN Countries, North America as well as Latin Americas, are very important region as the main contributors to the ASEAN tourists market.

From the perspective of Country by country
I.Tourism in Indonesia
It has been widely known that Indonesia occupies the largest portion of island in Southeast Asia. Linking Asia to Australia with a string of lush volcanic and beautiful tropical islands, Indonesia is the world´s largest archipelago in the world with 17.508 islands and being home to over 200 million inhabitants. Given this, there is no gain saying the fact that Indonesia is not only rich in its natural resources but also in culture treasures which have become its prominent comparative and competitive advantages in the current global tight competition of tourism development.

Indonesia needs to promote our country´s tourist spots in this Expo Mundial Turismo.

In view of the adverse effects of SARS and numbers of violent incidents culminating in the terrorist attack that brought about the tragedy of Bali last October 12, 2002 and the bombing of Marriott Hotel Jakarta 5 August 2003, Indonesia´s image as a safe, hospitable and interestingly beautiful place to visit has suffered immensely.

I hereby guarantee that Indonesia remains very much like a paradise on earth when it comes to its tourist destinations. The Indonesian people are as friendly as hospitable as ever to all visitors, especially tourists, investors and traders. And the Government of Indonesia has taken vigorous and effective peace and order as well as security measures to ensure, as far as humanly possible, the personal safety and convenience of everyone in the country, Indonesian citizens and foreign visitors alike.

II.Tourism in Malaysia
The tourism industry of Malaysia had performed a very good development on the recent years. The industry of tourism has growth constantly to become one of the main pillars of the economic growth of the nations and the main source of foreign income resources. The goal for the 8th Malaysian Plan (2001-2005 year) is to attract to 15, million of visitors for 2005 year. In order to achieve such goal, Malaysia has implemented a number of marketing campaigns and has been the host of world class events.

As a tourist destination, Malaysia has received millions of visitors through the years. In 1999, Malaysia registers a total of 7.93 millions of arrivals generating USD$3,237 millions. The growth of 1999 continued during 2000 year, registering a record data of 10.22 millions of arrivals. This influx of visitors allowed too Malaysia to get USD$4, 561 million of gains just for the concept of tourism. The number of visitor's arrivals to Malaysia in 2001 reached the 12.78 millions, a growth of 25% in comparative with the 2000 year. This achievement is translated in a larger foreign currencies income by tourism of the order of USD$6,374 MILLIONS. The tourism field is the second generator of foreign currency capitation in Malaysia just after the manufacturing industry. Malaysia received 13.3 million of tourists in 2002 year, a growth of 4% compared with the same period in 2001.

In terms of foreign currencies capture, in the year 2002 generated USD$ 6,784 Millions. The tourism industry is destined to become one of the main contributors to the economic growth for the 8th Malaysian Plan (2001-2005).

It may require the concentrated efforts not only of public and private sector, but the population itself. The successful implementation of the above mentioned strategic measures will provide the support to the tourism industry, in order to reaches its potential.

III.Tourism in the Philippines
The year 2003 has been dubbed by the Philippine Government as Visit Philippines Year 2003 with two important programs supporting this undertaking. With minimal budget for advertising and promotions, the Philippine Government is tapping the estimated 7 million overseas Filipinos as its Tourism Volunteers and de facto marketing representatives. It has also launched a marketing campaign labeled WOW Philippines, an acronym for the Wealth of Wonders which reflects the country's diverse offerings.

The Philippines is a bejeweled archipelago blessed with over 7,107 islands and a wealth of natural resources and unique culture. While the Philippines is most popular for its fine white sand beaches and deep waters teeming with a plethora of marine life, its attractions are as many as they are diverse - ecotourism sites, arts, cultural and historical destinations, adventure and sporting thrills, shopping and bargain hunting delight as well as special interest places to pursue particular concerns as gastronomy, archeology, fashion designing and weaving. One can also enjoy enthusiastic festivals throughout the country. The unique culture of the Philippines - a blend of the East and the West - makes it a must destination in the Asian region.

IV.Tourism in Thailand
Thailand is one of Asia's premier tourist destinations. Tourists are attracted to Thai culture and historic sites, shopping districts, beautiful and peaceful beaches, traditional and Buddhist festival and unique cuisine.

Thai service industry, which gains world-class reputation, contributes to this surge of tourism and its success with high-level hospitality. This is evidenced by this month issue of well-known Travel and leisure magazine, in which Bangkok is voted, by nearly 200.000 travelers, as the best city in Asia for travel and the Hotel Peninsula Bangkok is the world's best hotel, alongside with the Oriental Bangkok rated as the best hotel in the world a record 3 times (1996, 1999 and 2000).

While Thailand is experiencing rapid changes over times, most of her attractiveness remain the same : that is friendly faces, the historical architecture and credible landscape.

V.Tourism in Vietnam
Located on the east side of the Indochina peninsula an on the southeast of Asia, Vietnam is the country with over 4,000 years of history and the home to 54 different ethnics groups. Each of them has very rich cultural traditions. Coming to Vietnam, the visitors will have the chance to experience the great diversity, which has made Vietnam an unforgettable destination for tourists.

Vietnam offers great touring potentials with the spectacular natural scenery, a coastline of 3,260 km of unspoiled, white sand beaches and stunning lagoons. What´s more, the country has more than thousands historical, cultural and architectural sites, which are officially classified as national cultural heritage. Five of them: Halong Bay, the ancient capital of Hue, Hoi An ancient town, Myson Hollyland and Phong Nha Ke Bang zone of caves and grottos, have been recognized as world cultural heritage sites by UNESCO. Most visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the beauty of the country's natural settings. They can choose a wide range of itineraries from travel agencies offering tours, historic sites visits, forest and mountain trekking, sea-bathing, cave exploring... Besides, Vietnamese festivals and celebrations offer a colorful introduction to the traditions of the country, which are an expression of a truly distinct and fascinating culture. The unique gastronomy, the creative, artistic handicrafts are also great attractions to many visitors to Vietnam.

Thank you.
